Always wanted to (one day) have a spice drawer. Well ten years in the planning and wishing (and sheer luck) and 6 odd weeks in the building we finally DIY renovated our kitchen in 2006/2007 with three children (one in nappies still) and our Wedding planned for the Feb of 2007. LOL anyway, someone asked about spice drawer so popping the pics here.
Originally the spice drawer was meant to be at the top and the two other bigger drawers second and third. However, when the plumber connected the gas to the cooktop... we found the 'hose'/pipe was going to get in the way of the runners for the spice drawer because it wasn't so deep... so we tried the switcheroo and it worked. The spice drawer (don't look too close as there are spills to be cleared) is also for the 'bigger' things that won't fit in the metal or plastics drawer (the long tongs, the ladle etc). Here 'tis - it's the widest drawer we could get and fits neatly under the 90cmw (?) cooktop.
you could do it with any shallow drawer, or if you had a deeper drawer, you could line the spices up in the bottom, and then put a 'lay in/sit in' long wide shallow basket on the top, for other stuff (or the other way round, the spice on the top and less used stuff underneath, iykwim). You could do it with an open shelf - find a deep shallow basket that fits the width ($2 shop has heaps usually) and then put a shelf above it. That way you don't 'lose' the shelf space and end up with a kind of 'drawer' at the same time...
